Pre-lab Questions
1. Oogenesis and spermatogenesis are related in that they both ultimately produce haploid
cells and share similar meiotic and mitotic cell division, but there are significant
differences between the two. Discuss these similarities and differences below in your own
words. Focus on the timing, steps and phases of these processes in order to compare and
contrast them. (Hint: Your response should be 6-10 sentences in length.)
Oogenesis and spermatogenesis are similar because they both begin with diploid stem
cells that undergo mitosis and meiosis to produce haploid gametes. In both processes,
meiosis I and II occur, which reduce the chromosome number by half, creating cells with
23 chromosomes. However, the timing and outcomes of these processes are very
different. Spermatogenesis begins at puberty and continues throughout a man's life,
producing millions of sperm daily. It results in four functional sperm cells from each
spermatogonium. In contrast, oogenesis begins before birth; a female is born with all the
primary oocytes she will ever have, which are arrested in prophase I until puberty. Each
month after puberty, one oocyte completes meiosis I and starts meiosis II, but only
completes it if fertilization occurs. Oogenesis results in only one viable ovum and three
polar bodies due to unequal cytokinesis, while spermatogenesis produces four equal

sperm cells. This shows that while the processes are structurally similar, they differ
significantly in timing, frequency, and the number of viable gametes produced.
