Edexcel A Level Biology A (Salters Nuffield) June 2025 Paper 1 - Mark Scheme only

This document contains the Mark Scheme for Edexcel A Level Biology A (Salters–Nuffield), Paper 1, from the June 2025 examination series. It has been produced in line with the Pearson Edexcel Biology A (Salters–Nuffield) specification and provides authoritative guidance on how marks are awarded for each question in the paper. The mark scheme reflects the assessment of Topics 1–5, including Lifestyle, Health and Risk, Genes and Health, Voice of the Genome, Biodiversity and Natural Resources, and On the Wild Side. It demonstrates how examiners credit responses across all assessment objectives (AO1, AO2 and AO3), including precise scientific terminology, correct application of biological principles, data analysis, and evaluative reasoning. This resource is especially valuable for mock exam preparation and review. Students can use the mark scheme to understand examiner expectations, identify common misconceptions, and recognise the level of detail required to secure full marks, particularly in extended-response and data-handling questions. Teachers can use it to apply consistent and accurate marking in mock examinations, provide targeted feedback, and support students in refining exam technique. By engaging with the mark scheme alongside the question paper, learners can develop a clearer understanding of how to structure high-quality answers and maximise their performance in both mocks and final assessments.

, General Marking Guidance

• All candidates must receive the same treatment. Examiners must mark
the first candidate in exactly the same way as they mark the last.
• Mark schemes should be applied positively. Candidates must be rewarded
for what they have shown they can do rather than penalised for omissions.
• Examiners should mark according to the mark scheme not according to
their perception of where the grade boundaries may lie.
• There is no ceiling on achievement. All marks on the mark scheme should
be used appropriately.
• All the marks on the mark scheme are designed to be awarded. Examiners
should always award full marks if deserved, i.e. if the answer matches the
mark scheme. Examiners should also be prepared to award zero marks if
the candidate’s response is not worthy of credit according to the mark
scheme.
• Where some judgement is required, mark schemes will provide the
principles by which marks will be awarded and exemplification may be
limited.
• When examiners are in doubt regarding the application of the mark scheme
to a candidate’s response, the team leader must be consulted.
• Crossed out work should be marked UNLESS the candidate has replaced it
with an alternative response.
