QUESTION 1

Question 1.1
Define what multimodal storytelling is in your own words. Include three examples of multimodal
storytelling as part of your answer here.

Multimodal storytelling is a way of telling a story by using more than one form of communication at
the same time. Instead of relying only on written or spoken words, it combines different modes such
as pictures, sound, movement, gestures, and digital media to help share meaning. These different
modes work together to make the story more interesting, easier to understand, and more engaging
for the audience, especially learners with different learning styles.

For example, a picture book is a form of multimodal storytelling because it uses both images and
written text to tell a story. The pictures help explain the story and show emotions, settings, and
actions that words alone might not fully describe. Another example is a digital story or video, where
images, spoken narration, music, and sometimes text are combined to tell a story. This is common in
educational videos or short animated clips used in the classroom. A third example is drama or role
play, where learners use spoken words, body movements, facial expressions, and sometimes props
or costumes to tell a story. In this case, meaning is shared through action and performance, not just
language.

Multimodal storytelling is useful in teaching because it supports creativity, improves understanding,
and allows learners to express ideas in different ways.

Question 1.2
List two benefits of multimodal storytelling.

Two benefits of multimodal storytelling are that it improves learner understanding by presenting
information in different ways, which helps learners grasp ideas more easily, and it increases learner
engagement and interest because using images, sound, movement, and technology makes stories
more enjoyable and motivating to follow.

Question 2.1
Ruth Donnelly’s ‘The Car Trip’ may be classified as a modern poem. What is the main
characteristic of modern poetry?

The main characteristic of modern poetry is that it does not follow strict rules like traditional poems.
Modern poems often use free verse, meaning they do not have a fixed rhyme scheme or rhythm, and
they focus on everyday experiences, personal feelings, and real-life situations instead of formal
language or old themes.

Question 2.2
The above poem makes use of several poetic elements. Identify two of these elements used
in the poem, also providing an example of where it is evident in the poem.
