QUESTION 1: POETRY
1.1) There are two poetic devices in line one – a sound device and a figure of
speech. Identify both of them and discuss their effect on the meaning of the line.
“He clasps the crag with crooked hands;”
The sound device is alliteration. This is seen in the repetition of the “c” sound in clasps,
crag, and crooked. This sound makes the line strong and hard, which helps us imagine
the eagle gripping the rock tightly.
The figure of speech is personification. The eagle’s claws are described as “hands,” which
is a human feature. This makes the eagle seem powerful and human-like, helping the
reader picture how firmly it holds onto the rock.
1.2) Identify the figure of speech in the final line. Why is this such an effective
comparison?
Figure of speech in the final line
“And like a thunderbolt he falls.”
The figure of speech is a simile, shown by the word “like.” The eagle is compared to a
thunderbolt. This is effective because a thunderbolt is fast, powerful, and sudden. It
helps the reader imagine how quickly and forcefully the eagle dives down to catch its
prey.
1.3) What makes this poem appropriate for a diverse, multi-cultural South African
classroom of young learners? Provide three reasons to support your answer.
Firstly, the poem uses simple language and a short structure, which makes it easy for
learners from different language backgrounds to understand.
