Is obesity an epidemic?
What is Obesity? Obesity is a common, serious and a costly chronic disease that affects
adults and children. (CDC. 2023, September 21) Obesity has become a global issue that affects
the social, mental, and physical health of human being. Research suggests that obesity is an
epidemic which is caused by unhealthy diet, individual behaviors, and environment.
Obesity has become a globally rising problem and the statistics prove that it differs
from countries, towns, and cities. The environment that a person lives in, and the behavior
of an individual has a direct correlation to obesity. A person having easy access to high
calorie food leads to overeating. This leads to obesity which results in chronic diseases such
as diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. (Cleveland Clinic. 2022, June 13).
One of the main causes of obesity is unhealthy diet. Intake of more calories than a
person burns result in obesity. Cravings for fast food and drinks with high sugar has led
Americans to extreme obesity. As a result, people with obesity tends to eat more calories
before feeling full and hungry. In the modern world, the jobs that the people have are less
physically demanding which leads to less calorie burning. Due to this the high intake of calorie
amount and the less burning of the calories would increase the chances of being obese. (Mayo
Clinic. 2023, July 22).
Obesity has become an epidemic due to the availability and the popularity of the
western style diet practices. This type of food is characterized by food with high sugar, salt, and
fat, which are from processed food such as hamburgers, deli meat and red meat. ( Strauch, I.
2015, April 30). The ingredients in processed food promote addictive eating patterns which
leave you hungrier although you have consumed a lot of food which would result in obesity and
chronic diseases. (Cleveland Clinic. 2022, June 13).

Another cause of obesity is individual behaviors. Some of the choices that leads to
obesity are, inactivity, unhealthy food consumption, lack of sleep etc. (Easo Obesity. Auyeung,
L. 2023, May 8). If a person lives an inactive lifestyle where he does a job which requires them
to be seated 6 hours a day and that person does not want to practice any physical activity such
as going to a gym, take a walk in the park, take a morning run he would end up with obesity. A
job requirement is something that he cannot control but he can control if he wants to be active
or not. Lack of sleep is another choice which contributes to obesity. Not getting enough sleep
can change the hormone levels which would increase appetite which leads to weight gain and
obesity. (Mayo Clinic. 2023, July 22).
Individual behaviors have a direct correlation to obesity because by managing one’s
actions to control obesity, contribute to control the epidemic of obesity. Having a realistic
weight loss target, maintaining a food diary, setting up time for workout, meal prep would help
maintain a healthy lifestyle which would help fight obesity. ( Fruh, S. 2017, October 12).
According to the Centers for disease control 40% of households in America live more than a
mile from healthy food retailers but Obesity has become an epidemic where it is one of the
leading causes for death in America. (Cleveland Clinic. 2022, June 13). This is due to the
individual behaviors and choices that people make on their lifestyles.
Social and economic factors have a correlation to obesity as well. Although a person
wants to be active and eat healthy food, but if he does not have a safe or an appropriate place
to exercise and if he does not have access to healthy food, it would not be an easy task to avoid
Obesity. And if the people you live with are obese, there is a tendency that he would fall into
that trend as well. (Mayo Clinic. 2023, July 22).
