Lab 2: Alka Seltzer Stoichiometry
General Chemistry Lab 1111- section 20
Pre-Lab Grade (15 pts): 15
Post-Lab Grade (15 pts):
Date: 9/22/22
Objectives:
The purpose of this experiment is with the use of stoichiometric measurements to when releasing
Alka-Seltzer into water calculate the amount of sodium bicarbonate that reacted, while also
finding the percent by mass of NaHCO3 contained in Alka-Seltzer tablets. The question this
experiment will address is if one can calculate the amount of sodium bicarbonate that reacted, as
well as determine the percent by mass of NaHCO3 contained in Alka-Seltzer tablets when
release of a of carbon takes place.
Procedure:
(Get breaker weight)
1. Use of a graduated cylinder and measure 60 mL of deionized water. Transfer to a 250 mL
beaker.
2. Use an electronic balance in the balance room to measure and record the combined weight of
the beaker and water.
3. Use a weigh boat in the balance room to measure and record the weight of one Alka-Seltzer
tablet.

4. Return to the lab and place the pill into the beaker while gently swirling the beaker to ensure
the tablet dissolves completely.
5. In the balance room, when the bubbling stops, weigh and record the beaker's contents. Refer
to the data sheet and copy it into your lab notebook.
6. Return to the lab and use water to clean and rinse the beaker.
7. Determine/Calculate the mass of the generated carbon dioxide.
8. Determine/Calculate the NaHCO3 that has reacted
9. Determine/Calculate the tablet's percentage by mass of the NaHCO3 that has reacted.
10. Use the following vinegar and water ratios to do the experiment five more times.
a. 10 mL of vinegar + 50 mL of water
b. 20 mL of vinegar + 40 mL of water
c. 30 mL of vinegar + 30 mL of water
d. 40 mL of vinegar + 20 mL of water
e. 50 mL of vinegar + 10 mL of water respectively.
*!Values for each should be recorded on the data sheet and in your lab notebook!*
11. Using the Excel spreadsheet included on Canvas, graph the calculated percent by mass of the
reacted NaHCO3 in the tablet vs the amount of vinegar used.
12.All garbage should be disposed of in the Non-Regulated (NR) waste container.
