⫸ APEX Requirements for CH-53E Super Stalion. Answer: Dual-
point suspension system, uses a forward and aft cargo hook, located
10 ft apart and must be used for dual-point loads (A/C maximum lift
capacity for this is 32,000 lbs with a max of 60% of sling load on
either forward or aft hook). A pendant is designed to be used with the
dual-point system to provide more clearance between helicopter and
hookup team.
Aircrew can open forward or aft cargo hook electrically or manually.
Manual release lever is on left side of cargo hook. In emergency,
ground crew open hook by moving manual release lever up.
Pendant cargo hook not opened electrically. Aircrew opens by pulling
on the lanyard inside of A/C. Ground crew can rotate manual release
knob on side of cargo hook to open hook but must also re-latch the
pendant cargo hook after it's opened each time.
Center cargo hook, suspended on end of pendant below fuselage near
the centerline, is used for single-point loads. Even though hook
capacity is greater (36,000lbs), aircraft max lift capacity is 32,000 lbs.
Loads < 6,000 lbs may not jettison when needed so recommended you
never carry < 6,000LBs externally. Aircrew can open cargo hook
manually or electrically. Manual release knob is located on a side of
top part of hook. In emergency, ground crew can open cargo hook by
rotating know clockwise.
,*NOTES* When attaching dual point loads to CH-53E/K and *NOT*
using CHRP, each hook being utilized MUST have its own static
discharge man.
Do *NOT* attach single point loads to CH-53E if there is a nylon
point of attachment to A/C
