Comparting Artists In The 19th Century

“The aim of art is not to represent the outward appearance of things, but their inward

significance”. This quote was by the most incredible Greek philosopher Aristotle. In this quote

he talks about how a different outlook in life could be. You can make art and the piece that you

make you have your own idea on what it is. But when others look at it, they will have a different

outlook then you. Two artists who lived during the same time had different outlooks on how they

portrayed their artistic abilities.

A close friend and a model to many artists of her time, Suzanne Valadon was an artist

who lived in the nineteenth century in Paris. Most of her artwork would include oil paintings of

the human body. She was a post-impressionist, rejecting impressionism spontaneous of rending

of light and color. She was a pioneer in being a woman in a man’s world of art it was hard for

women to get validation for their art. Suzanne helped by paving the way for other women to be

artists. She challenged women to think for themselves. The other thing that Suzanne did was in

her artwork she symbolized her work. The work that she made it helped show other people

especially women that it was okay to show emotion and symbolism in their work. On the other

hand, Marc Chagall, who was a Russian – French artists, focused his work on paintings, book

illustrations, stained glass, and most of all fine art prints. Eastern European and Jewish folk

culture was one of his biggest styles of artwork.
