TEFL.org-US Teaching Large Classes-Unit 3 Assignment
PPP
Lead-in
Place students in small cluster groups of six students and ten rectangular
tables. Choose group leaders and be sure they are all present and ready to
help. Welcome the class and introduce the topic of making excuses with a
humorous story. Use visual aids from a Power Point Presentation projected
onto a screen to contextualize the theme of making excuses. Set up the
presentation to auto play the pictures several times so all the students can
get a good look at them. After the students have looked at the visuals, ask
groups to discuss when they have made excuses for a situation at work or for
an event.
10 mins
Presentation
The key TL phrases for this lesson would be as follows:
1) I’m afraid I cannot make it to…
2) Would you mind…?
3) I know it is a lot to ask, but...
4) I would be eternally grateful if…
5) I’m not feeling well today because…
6) I have a last-minute appointment that I cannot reschedule …
7) I have a situation at home…
8) I have been called for jury duty…
Meaning: Use previous images of people making excuses from the Power
Point Presentation. As each image is shown, use TPR to make the meaning
more clear.
Pronunciation: Model the sentences by using TPR such as hand gestures to
ask someone for help with something or act out calling someone to make an
excuse. This method will be done for each of the eight sentences. Ask
students to repeat after the teacher. While listening to the repeated
language, ensure students are using correct pronunciation.
Form: From an overhead projector, present the different phrases about
making excuses from the TL. The overhead projector would ensure visibility
for all sixty students.
Elicit by using concept checking questions (CCQ’s) to verify understanding.
CCQ’s can possibly be as follows:
1) What is a “school meeting?”
2) What does the word, “assignment” mean?
3) Do you have a lot of “homework?”
4) What does it mean to pass a test?
