TEFL.org-Methodology-Unit 12 Assignment
Lead-in:
Place the students in pairs and ask them to tell their partner about three
things they did this past weekend, and something happened to stop the
action. Give feedback by writing board notes. (5 mins) S-S
Presentation:
Place visuals around the room of a picnic, rain, an outside scene, and snow.
Write two sentences on the board: “While we were having a picnic, it started
to rain.” and “While we were playing outside, it started to snow.” Place seats
in a horseshoe position and take the visuals away. Ask students to share
about how many they can remember. Then place the students in pairs and
ask them to discuss the differences or similarities between these two
sentences both in meaning, and in form. (19 mins) S-S, P/W & T-S
Concept check questions: “What happened first? The picnic or the rain?” “Is
it raining now?” “What happened first? Playing outside or snow? “Is it
snowing now?” (3 mins) P/W & T-S
Practice (controlled)
Students will be given a worksheet including the phrases, “we were having”
and “we were playing” with sentence completion. This will be a gap fill
activity. We will correct as a class. (10 mins) P/W & T-S
Production (free)
Tell students to get into pairs once again. One of the students will be the
interviewer, and the other students will be a famous person. The interviewer
will ask about the famous person’s past continuous interrupted experiences,
then students will swap roles. An example question could be: “When you
went to the party last night, what happened? (22 mins) P/W
