Source A A Chinese poster published in 1950.
The two figures represent the leaders of China and the USSR standing behind
the flags of their nations. The title of the poster was ‘The flags of our friendship.’

Source B Adapted from a statement by US President Eisenhower on 8 October 1957.
President Eisenhower was responding to American public concern after the
Soviet launch of the Earth’s first man-made satellite, four days earlier.
The launch of the Soviet satellite is of considerable importance but it should
not be exaggerated. Since 1945 the Soviet Union has prioritised the
development of missiles and rockets. However, the United States has worked
hard on all aspects of a space programme. We expect to launch a satellite
within the year. The United States hopes that the Soviet Union will use 5
satellites for peace and not for military purposes.
Source C A Soviet poster with the title, ‘Glory to the Soviet people’. It was published in
1963, the same year that a Soviet astronaut became the first woman in space.
Khrushchev would not name the head of the Soviet space programme, saying it
was the Soviet people that deserved the credit.
