all of these notes will cover the entire coursework for gender and sexuality in European society at slippery rock university. This course is taught by dr. Gressang and it is a very in depth look at what sexuality looked like for a lot of different people in Europe. You will learn about the sexual revolution, and what some had to deal with during the world wars, regarding their gender and sexuality. You will learn so many things you never even knew happened but were very real and very important.

Napoleon : Restorer of the Patriarchy
● He tries to make divorce almost impossible to get for women
● Re-establishes the authority of husbands
○ Made sure fathers were an unchallenged authority
○ Fathers had to give their daughters permission until they were 25 (sons 21)
● Napoleon is basically the face of the patriarchy
● He also restores the catholic church
● Napoleon’s troops showed a fraternal model ; didn’t want to stray too far away from it

Factories would change things
● Tempting individuals away from the family industry with hopes of higher wages
○ It is not longer the center of industry
○ Not every member of the family would be performing an essential task
○ Tasks would be divided into gender specific categories but everyone would be
doing something
● Impact on Women’s Labor
○ No longer seen as an essential cog
○ Upper class women are starting to remove themselves from the workforce
○ Will see an increase in addressing the issue of suffrage ; women’s advocacy
● Impact of wage earners on women’s advocacy
● Agricultural Revolution
○ Need to diversify earnings
○ Able to produce more food more efficiently with less workers ; leads to these
workers needing to find a job
■ The solution was sending the younger generations to cities to factories,
sending them to be domestic servants
■ The type of labor is changing
○ Less data women’s continued labor in the home
■ Have less data on the work women did in the home ; tending to garden,
sewing, cleaning etc.

● Belief that industry was “a masculine” activity which a woman can neither understand or
master
● 10-20% of businesses in certain areas were controlled by widows
● Emergence of a new industrial bourgeoisie, neither gentry or aristocracy NOR proletariat
