1. Explain the digestion that occurs in the oral cavity.
The oral cavity is where digestion begins. The sublingual, parotid, and submandibular glands
secrete saliva into the oral cavity. The saliva lubricates food during chewing, protects the mouth
from pathogens, and initiates chemical digestion. The teeth mechanically break down food
through mastication. The pharynx receives food from the mouth after swallowing, when the
tongue forces food to the back of the mouth. Food then travels to the esophagus.
2. What is the function of the liver in digestion?
The liver's role in digestion is to process the nutrients absorbed from the small intestines and
produce bile.
3. What role does the gall bladder play in digestion?
The gallbladder stores excess bile. When food enters the duodenum, bile flows easily from the
liver and gallbladder into the duodenum.
4. Why is the orientation of muscle of the stomach wall important? How does this contribute to its
function?
The stomach consists of two main muscle layers, the longitudinal and circular layers. The
longitudinal layer helps push food from the upper part of the stomach (cardiac region) towards
the lower part (pylorus). The circular layer assists in keeping the pyloric and cardiac sphincters
closed.
