Locomotor skills
 Kindergarten: performs locomotor skills while maintaining balance

Running- critical elements
 EYES AND BODY
o Focus in direction of travel. Body upright position with slight forward lean. Toes
forward.
 FLIGHT
o Both feet temporarily off the ground. Foot lands heel to toe.
 ARMS
o Bent 90° and move forward and backward without crossing midline.
 KNEES
o Bent to bring the heel up behind the body.

Running- common errors
 No flight phase
 Foot not coming up behind the body
 Arms crossing the midline of the body

Sliding- critical elements
 CHIN, EYES AND BODY
o Chin over lead shoulder. Eyes in direction of slide. Body upright.
 FEET
o Feet stay parallel throughout entire movement.
 FLIGHT
o Both feet temporarily off the ground.
 GLIDE
o Body moves with smooth, rhythmic motion.

 Body turned so the side is not leading the body
 Feet not coming up off the ground

Hopping- critical elements
 EYES AND BODY
o Eyes in direction of travel. Body upright position.
 FOOT AND TAKEOFF LEGG
o Take off and land on same foot. Bend knee when landing.
 SWING KNEE
o Swing knee is bent and swings forward.
 ARMS
o Elbows bent. Arm opposite swing arm moves forward.
 GLIDE
o Body moves in smooth, rhythmic motion

Hopping- common errors
 Hopping foot not coming up off the floor or landing knee not bending
 Swing knee not moving

Galloping- critical elements
 EYES AND BODY
o Eyes in direction of travel. Body upright with slight forward learn.
 FLIGHT
o Step forward and close with back foot. Both feet temporarily off the ground.
 ARMS
o Elbows bent. Arms swinging forward and back.
 GLIDE
o Body moves in smooth, rhythmic motion

Galloping- common errors
 No forward body lean
 Feet not coming up off the ground during the flight phase

Leaping- critical elements
 RUN
o Take several running steps before starting to leap.
 TAKEOFF
o Push off the ground with one foot.
 FLIGHT
o Both feet temporarily off the ground in a stride position and the arm opposite the
lead foot reaches forward.
 LANDING
o Land on the opposite foot from the takeoff foot. Knee bent to absorb force.
 RUN
o Run a few steps after landing

 Using two feet for takeoff
