Smarter Decision Making through
Psychology
August 4, 2020
Using your problem solving and self and social awareness skill and the information that you
learned in Chapter 7 of the webtext about brain plasticity and mindset, answer the questions
below.
For each question, you should write a paragraph-length response (5–7 sentences) to receive
credit for this assignment. Use your Soomo webtext as a resource. When you paraphrase the
ideas that you read in the webtext, be sure to provide an in-text citation using the Strayer
Writing Standards.
Note: This assignment asks you to apply the information from your webtext to a scenario. It
does not require research or use of additional sources. However, if you choose to use
information from an outside source (including, but not limited to, information in Blackboard or
videos) you must cite that source in the text and provide an SWS source list. You must also cite
your webtext and enter it into your source list.
Question 1: Define mindset and describe how mindset relates to Reggie’s reaction to the
compliance test. Use your Soomo webtext as you define mindset and apply it to Reggie’s
reaction. Remember to provide an in-text citation for the ideas that you paraphrase.
A mindset is a set of self-perceptions or beliefs people hold about themselves. These
determine how one behaves, what they think about, and how they view the world. In the
case of Reggie, he lacks confidence in his ability to learn other ways of performing his
job. Given his fixed mindset, he thinks that the skills he acquired years ago are all he
has to work with, so he is incapable of learning anything different. To motivate himself,
Reggie must better his self-efficacy.
Question 2: What is brain plasticity? How does brain plasticity relate to mindset Use your
Soomo webtext as you define brain plasticity and discuss its relationship to mindset. Remember
to provide an in-text citation for the ideas that you paraphrase.
Brain plasticity can be defined as the ability of the brain to constantly reshape itself and
grow new connections in response to experience. Repetition of skills and learning
further information causes physical changes in the brain. With practice, brain cells
enable a person to achieve faster transmission of impulses and form new neural
networks. We all know that a muscle will get stronger with exercise and effort; similarly,
the brain gets more potent with mental challenge and practice.
