, Activity 1: Timetables
List two advantages of a school timetable
(1) To ensure that no teacher is scheduled for too many back-to-back classes or for two classes at
the same time.
(2) A well-constructed timetable establishes a natural rhythm and routine, which can be comforting
to teachers and students.
Is the school timetable at the school you are visiting functional?
Yes No
Give two reasons for your answer.
(1) Each teacher has his/her own personal timetable which are connected to all the learners in the
school. The teachers do not have full class schedules every day.
(2) There are different “Keys” for each grade which are divided up into parts for each subject which
means that none of the periods or subjects clash with one another.
Briefly explain a problem you experienced with the class timetable.
Some classes are split into two periods at different times. For example: Mathematics/Science
double periods are split; one in the morning and the other one at the end of the day. This makes it
hard for the teachers to schedule tests which must be longer than 30 minutes.
The classes are also mixed regarding English and Afrikaans speaking learners, for example Life
Orientation. The teachers must then teach in both languages which takes up more time.
Is there a homework and extra-curricular timetable in the class you observed?
Yes No
3
, If yes, give at least three specific characteristics of such a timetable.
The timetable is set out to make time-management easier. Each teacher has his/her own
timetable or practise times for their teams.
All the different extra-curricular activities are arranged and spaced so that learners can
attend most of the activities they are interested in.
Learners use these times to manage their time between sport and homework, and
teachers can use it to know how much homework the learners can get according to the
time they will have available.
Activity 2: Attendance register
You have to keep the attendance register of a class for a week and provide the following particulars:
Number of learners: 23 Grade: 8
Age: from 13 (years) to 14 (years)
Number: 11 (boys) 12 (girls) Average attendance for two weeks 85 %
On completion of this assignment, ask the teacher to complete the statement
below:
I, Mr/Ms (initials and last name): E.H Pretorius confirms that the student teacher
(initials and last name) J.D van Wyk has satisfactorily kept the attendance register.
