Opioid Use Disorder: Recognize.
Respond. Recover.
A Preventable Crisis We Must Confront
Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) is a serious, chronic condition that impacts
individuals, families, and entire communities. While treatable, OUD
continues to take thousands of lives each year in the United States. This
PSA aims to raise awareness of the warning signs, risk factors, and wide-
reaching consequences of opioid misuse and to promote support,
compassion, and recovery.
What Are the Signs of Opioid Use Disorder?
According to the DSM-5-TR Learning Companion for Counselors, signs and
symptoms of OUD include:
• Using opioids in larger amounts or over more extended periods than
intended
• Unsuccessful efforts to reduce or control use
• Intense cravings and compulsive drug-seeking behavior
• Withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, muscle aches, or insomnia
