CBT is a common short-term, structured, goal-oriented form of
psychotherapy that is useful alone or in combination with
other therapies in treating a variety of psychiatric diagnoses
CBT puts emphasis on client ownership and self-confidence in
the change process.

Type of diagnoses CBT treats.. depression, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, eating
disorders, severe mental illness and post-traumatic stress
disorder.

CBT Relationship to Nursing Theory Concepts that are central to many nursing theorists, including
Orem, Roy, and Parse, have associations with CBT. Orem's self-
care deficit nursing theory provides a framework to view CBT
as a supportive intervention that fosters effective self-care
behaviors. Roy's Adaptation Theory, with its premise that
individuals use coping mechanisms to adapt to stimuli, both
internal and external, share underpinnings with CBT.

Cognitive distortions faulty, exaggerated, or irrational thinking patterns that cause
individuals to inaccurately perceive reality, which can lead to
negative emotions and psychopathological states, including
depression and anxiety.

Should statement You tell yourself things should be the way you hoped or
expected them to be
Ex. "I shouldn't yell at my kids. I should always be able to keep
my temper. I'm the adult here."

all-or-nothing thinking the tendency to believe that one's performance must be
perfect or the result will be a total failure

Ex: "I got an A- on the biology exam! I never get below an A. I
am such a complete failure!"

Catastrophizing Dramatically exaggerating the negative consequences of any
minor event
Ex: "I know my relationship is in trouble. If my girlfriend leaves,
I know I'll never find someone else and will be alone forever."

Filtering Ex: "I just read my student evaluations for the term. While
they're almost all positive, one student felt that I was
insensitive and never responded promptly even though I
answered every email within 24 hours. I'm a terrible teacher."

Overgeneralization the tendency to interpret a single negative event as a never-
ending pattern of defeat and failure

Ex: "Every single time I work the night shift at the hospital, they
always give me the worst assignments! It's always a
nightmare!"

Mind reading the assumption that we understand what another person
thinks or how another person perceives something
Ex: "I was at lunch with my friend today. She kept looking at
her phone the whole time. I just know she didn't want to be
there and is bored with our friendship."

Emotional reasoning Drawing a conclusion based on an emotional state

Ex: "I started a diet on Monday and was doing well until they
brought in pizza for lunch on Thursday. I feel like I'll never be
able to succeed at this, so I'm giving up."

techniques for stabilization Socratic Dialogue and Decatastrophizing

Socratic Dialogue hallmark of CBT and helps facilitate guided discovery
"mutual discovery in which the therapist guides the patient
through a series of questions and answers to elicit automatic
thoughts and
assumptions, and examine the logic and evidence that relates
to them"

Questions used in Socratic Dialogue memory, translation, interpretation, application, analysis, and
evaluation.

De-catastrophizing is a cognitive restructuring technique used to explore fears
and help challenge catastrophic thinking. Decatastrophizing
involves examining the outcome the client considers to be the
"worst possible" and developing a plan of action to address
that outcome to decrease anxiety.
