QUESTION 1

1.1.Communication can be regarded as a central concept in Socio-education. Name any FIVE
essences of communication and indicate the inadequate actualisation thereof.
ANSWER:
1. THE EMOTIONAL ASPECT- negative communication: expression of negative feelings, not
entering into the lives of others.
2. THE AUTHORITY ASPECT- autocratic communication, excessive control and domination and
compulsive exercise of authority.
3. THE FLEXIBILITY ASPECT- this is the possibility of actualising a large variety of actions,
feelings and ideas.
4. THE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF OTHER PEOPLE- negative communication, negating and
disregarding the unique individuality of other people.
5. THE DIALOGUE ASPECT- one-sided communication, a monologue or sermon by the adult
instead of a dialogue between educator and child.



1.2.Maslow formulated his Hierarchy of human needs. Indicate all FIVE needs and apply them to
the needs of a child and indicate how these can be met.
ANSWER:

1. PHYSICAL NEEDS- the need for oxygen, water, food, rest, must be satisfied before a human
being can be motivated to do anything else.

-The needs of a child are met as follows: his physical needs are met by the loving care
experienced by the child in the I-YOU relationships.

2. THE SAFETY/SECURITY NEEDS- these are needs for safety/security and freedom from fear.

The needs of a child are met as follows: the feeling of communication are met
interpersonally.

3. SOCIAL NEEDS- these are the needs for acceptance and belonging, and for love and care.

4. ESTEEM NEEDS- these are met when people communicate to the child, their recognition and
approval and respect for his behaviour and achievements.

5. NEEDS FOR SELF-ACTUALISATION- the child can only self-actualise in communication with
other people.

1.3. According to Pretorius (2011), the family is the ideal breeding ground for misbehaviour.

unemployment, political or religious persecution. In other words, unfavourable conditions
in the area which people choose to leave.

- PULL FACTORS- such as better opportunities elsewhere, economic boom elsewhere,
promotion elsewhere. In other words, attractive conditions in the area to which people
move.

- CHANNELS- such as availability of transport, information, financial help, absence or
presence of strict emigration laws. Factors facilitating or hampering movement. A good
example from South African history would be the pass and influx control laws.
