Question 1: Poetry (“Nightsong City” by Dennis Brutus).
Juxtaposition of Rest and Anxiety in Dennis Brutus’ “Nightsong City”
Dennis Brutus’ poem “Nightsong City” functions like a lullaby addressed to an uneasy
urban landscape, where tenderness is constantly unsettled by the presence of violence
and unrest. The speaker urges the city to “sleep well,” yet this desire for peace is
persistently interrupted by disturbing images of surveillance, exhaustion, and hostility.
By placing calmness beside unease, Brutus reflects both his affection for the city and
his awareness of the troubled society it represents. Through imagery, metaphor,
personification, sound devices, and tone, he constructs a world that longs for rest but
cannot detach itself from anxiety.
The poem opens with the soft repetition, “sleep well, my love, sleep well.” This refrain
establishes intimacy and reassurance, as though the city is a cherished companion
being lulled to sleep. However, the sense of calm is immediately interrupted by imagery
that signals restlessness. Brutus speaks of “harbour lights glaze at restless docks” and
“police cars cockroach through the tunnel streets.” The juxtaposition is striking: a
soothing address is followed by images of disturbance and surveillance. The
affectionate call for rest cannot erase the harshness of urban life. From the beginning,
rest and anxiety are interwoven.
Imagery plays a central role in this tension. On one hand, “harbour lights” evoke beauty
and stillness under the night sky. Yet the same lights “glaze at restless docks,”
suggesting unease and sleepless movement. Likewise, the grotesque picture of “police
cars cockroach through the tunnel streets” conveys menace and claustrophobia. The
comparison to cockroaches highlights both their persistence and their sinister presence,
while “tunnel streets” implies confinement. The effect is that every moment of calm is
shadowed by unease, as if serenity itself is never safe from intrusion.
