,Introduction
I have been tasked to produce a report that provides details of lubrication systems and
lubricants used in the tool room machines which include:
- Lathe
- Vertical milling machines
I will be reviewing lubrication systems used in the lathe’s gearbox and the knee leadscrew
of the milling machine, alternatives of the lubricants and the maintenance and lubrication
requirements for each tool room machine.
, Lathe Gearbox
The lathe gearbox, usually featured on the headstock of the lathe, is a key component of a
lathe which changes allows the adjusting of spindle speed and feed rate. The lathe gearbox
contains moving parts which create friction which leads to wear and tear of the moving
parts and overheating which can reduce the lifespan of the gear box. For this reason,
lubrication is used.
The image above on the left shows the interior of the gearbox where the lubrication system
is located. The image on the right above shows the exterior of the gearbox.
