,Introduction
This report will explain the characteristics, applications, operation and maintenance
considerations of consumables and power transmission components used in
mechanical systems and how they contribute to a system. The mechanical systems
that will be covered in this report are a two-post vehicle lift and a four-cylinder, liquid
cooled vehicle petrol engine. In both mechanical systems I will evaluate the
characteristics by explaining why and how it is used. Furthermore, I will discuss how
each component contributes to the overall operation of a system. Then, I will explain
how the component should be maintained and replaced and lastly, I will suggest and
justify alternatives for each component.
, Mechanical Power Transmission Systems
Mechanical power transmission systems are systems that transfer energy from a part of
a machine into another in the form of mechanical work. The system collects energy
from a power source such as a motor for a Two-post vehicle lift or an engine for a four-
cylinder vehicle petrol engine. These systems use components which include gears
belts, chains and other components, which will be discussed in this report, working
together to transport rotational motion, speed or torque between parts of a machine.
