, 1. Postcolonialism and the Critique of Development
A. Understanding Postcolonialism
Postcolonial theory examines the lasting impacts of colonialism on formerly
colonized societies, especially in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. It highlights how
colonial power dynamics continue to shape global politics, economics, culture, and
development practices even after independence.
B. Critique of the Concept of Development
Postcolonial theorists argue that the mainstream concept of development is rooted
in Western ideologies. Key critiques include:
Eurocentric Bias: The dominant development models are based on Western
historical experiences, particularly industrialization and capitalism. These are
presented as the universal path to progress, ignoring the unique histories and
values of non-Western societies.
Cultural Imperialism: Postcolonial thinkers argue that development programs
often impose Western norms, lifestyles, and technologies onto non-Western
societies, undermining local knowledge, traditions, and systems.
Colonial Continuity: Development is seen as a continuation of colonialism in
a new form — often called “neo-colonialism.” Through development aid,
multinational corporations, and international financial institutions (like the IMF
and World Bank), Western powers still exert control over the Global South.
Marginalization of Local Voices: Development is frequently designed and
implemented by external actors, with minimal input from the communities it
targets. Postcolonial theorists emphasize the need to amplify the voices of local
people — especially women — who are often silenced.
C. Women’s Roles in Development: A Postcolonial Perspective
