Assignment C, Part 1 - An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced

At first sight, the material covered throughout the book is well thought out and with a
clear structure, introduces verb tenses on the first chapters so students are able to
recognize and use them at a later stage. The material does get more complicated with
more in-depth grammar subjects and activities. The unit starts with a general overview of
the subject to check for understanding. It does so by challenging the students to answer a
series of well thought out questions. It gives students plenty of space for discussions,
debate, and practice introducing grammar concepts as needed. There is not teacher´s book
or any extra teaching resources mentioned in this unit.

The sample unit gives students a wide range of activities to work on. Most of those are
aimed at pair or group work encouraging communication between peers. Therefore, the
material was designed to be used in a classroom environment making it difficult for a
student to follow the material independently. The materials in the chapter are well
presented but it looks cluttered. There is too much of it in one page making it difficult and
unappetizing to read. On the other hand, there is a wide range of interesting activities
suited to the level that the book is intended to. Throughout the unit it is plausible to see
that the activities proposed cover all four skills and language areas.

Each unit comes with a grammar and vocabulary practice and a language summary.

Taking what I have mentioned into account, I would use this book to help me plan my
lessons. I would take information out of it and use some of the exercises the book
proposes, but I wouldn´t follow the book with my students.

The activities could be adapted to suit the needs of advance students but the suggested
texts are more suitable for a B2 level.

Globalisation affects us all and, bearing in mind that I have a mixed nationality group of
students living and learning English in a foreign country, makes it appetizing and
engaging. Moreover, the material covered throughout the activities doesn´t seem offensive
to diverse students.

There are no tests as such in the given chapter but continuous formative learning could be
applied if using this text book.

All in all is a great tool with well thought out activities designed to make students talk,
share ideas, come up with concepts of their own and use the target language to
communicate with others. It comes with a variety of exercises that challenge students to
think critically about an everyday topic.
