Introduction to A&P

1. What is the difference between anatomy and physiology?
Anatomy studies the structure of the body parts and their relations to one another and
physiology studies how body parts work and carry out life-sustaining activities.
2. What is the difference between a response and a stimulus?
A stilimus incites a reaction or response.
3. What is metabolism?
the chemical processes that occur within a living organism in order to maintain life.
4. What is homeostasis?
The body’s ability to maintain a relatively stable internal environment even
though the outside world (external environment) changes continuously.
5. List the basic units of organization in the body from smallest to largest.
atom -> molecuke or compund -> organelle -> cell -> tissue -> organ -> organ system -> organism
6. What is the difference between negative and positive feedback loops?
Negative feedback control systems are inhibitory. They oppose a change by creating a response
that is opposite in direction to the initial disturbance that activated the system.
7. Give three examples of each type of feedback loop.
8. How many sections are found in the abdominopelvic region of the human body?
9 regions and 4 quadrants
9. Identify the terms: buccal, cephalic, and inguinal.
10. Name and describe the four main planes of the human body.
11. What is bilateral symmetry?
12. Differentiate between the ventral and dorsal cavity.
13. Differentiate between the terms visceral and parietal.
14. Define the terms pleural, peritoneal, and pericardial.
15. What does the term lateral mean?
