INTRODUCTION

Listening is considered a vital component of effective communication. It is an
essential skill in any context, whether it’s in the workplace, in personal relationships
or in any other setting. People can response more appropriate and communicate
more effectively with those around them, by learning to listening. The essay will
identify whether Sam Maluleke is a good listener or not. What I believe can be done
to solve the issue and whether Sam ought to have intervened in the case then
Conclude.

1. IS SAM A GOOD LISTENER?

According to Kline (1996:15) listening is a complex activity that is an essential aspect
of the overall communication process, albeit one that is sometimes overlooked.

Sam interrupted Brain when he tried to talk to him about him and the other members
of the section, pointing out his flaws and told him to determine what to do about it
and told him to get out of his office. Based on how Sam handled himself, I could say
that Sam is not a good listener. A great listener listens without distraction; instead of
listening to what Brian had to say to him, he began to divert him, denying Brian the
opportunity to explain why he is not engaging in the group like his colleagues. A good
listener has the ability to concentrate on what is being said, to avoid interrupting the
speaker, and to not prejudge the message, which Sam lacks (Zenger et al., 2016).

It's crucial to remember to pay the speaker your full attention when they talk. Kline
(1996:48) state that sometimes individuals don’t listen mainly because they are
preoccupied. Sam and Brian did not have enough time to address the issue since
Sam had several reports to finish. By managing your time effectively, you can ensure
you can limit distractions while you are listening. Being a good listener frequently
entails initiating a dialogue and allowing a conversation to begin between you and
the speaker; in the case of Sam and Brian, Sam did not allow Brian to talk; instead,
Brian was the one listening to Sam.

A good listener should be able to Pace the discussion by recognizing the purpose of
the speaker's message and interpreting their nonverbal signs to decide when it's

2.WHAT CAN BE DONE TO OVERCOME THIS PROBLEM

According to Rogers and Farson (2015) Active listening is an important way to bring
about changes in people. He further state that active listening does not always imply
extensive periods spent listening to personal or professional problems. It is just a
method of approaching challenges that come from the normal day-to-day activities of
any job. Sam must practice active listening so that he can not only hear what Brain is
saying but also notice the nonverbal signs he is sending. Sam should ask clarifying
questions and assure Brain that he is being heard and understood. This will have a
significant impact on his interactions with Brain and the other members.

Sam should improve his listening skills. Be more approachable so that other
employees feel free to come to him with their issues. learning to be patient and pay
attention throughout conversations. to begin regularly using active listening to
address difficulties at work. Sam needs to try to listen effectively because it takes a
lot of concentration. Kline (1996:45) offered six tips on how to become a better
listener, they go as follows: understand the complexities, prepare to listen, adjust to
the situations, focus on the key points, capitalize on the speed differential and
organize material for learning. Sam would be able to focus and interact with Brain
more successfully if he could implement those suggestions, creating a friendly
atmosphere between them.

Also, Sam should not have waited for Brain to approach him first, as he has noted
that Brain struggles to blend in with the rest of the group. As Brain supervisor, he
should have offered Brain support so that he could participate to the function and
lead to the team's success.

3.SHOULD HAVE SAM GOTTEN INVOLVES?

Yes, Sam as the accounting manager, should be directly involved in the situation of
Brian, because the manager's responsibility is to ensure that employees are carrying
out their tasks and responsibilities. The manager can act as a leader to stimulate
