Unit 6 Assignment A: Undertake a literature search and review to
produce an investigative project proposal

Title of my experiment: Investigating the Effect of Salt Concentration on
the freezing point of Water

Aim of my experiment: To explore how different concentrations of salt
affect the freezing point of water

Equipment needed for this experiment includes:

 Distilled water
 Salt (table salt or sodium chloride)
 Measuring spoons
 Thermometer
 Beakers or cups
 Stirring rod
 Ice cubes

Method:

1. Firstly, you need to label 3 cups or beakers. One as ‘Control’, one as
‘Low Salt’, and one as ‘High Salt’.
2. Put equal amounts of distilled water into each of these beakers.
3. In the cup saying ‘Control’ do not put any salt.
4. In the cup saying ‘Low Salt’ add in a very small amount of salt, for
example 1 teaspoon.
5. In the cup saying ‘’High Salt’ add in a big amount of salt, for example 3
teaspoon.
6. Stir each cup until all the salt is fully dissolved.
7. Put every cup into the freezer at the same time.
8. Keep an eye on and monitor each solution's temperature using a
thermometer.
9. To make sure of even cooling, you need to stir each solution every 10
to 15 minutes,
10. When the solution starts to freeze - formation of ice crystals –
record the temperature of the solution.

Results:

1

, Record and write down the temperature of each solution before it goes into
the freezer.

Record and write down the temperature of each solution as it starts to
freeze.

Analysis:

Now compare the freezing points of all 3 solutions.

Discuss and write about how salt attendance makes a difference to the
water's freezing point.

Conclusion:

Look over your findings of the experiment and make a summary of it. In this
include the impact of salt concentrations to the freezing point of water.

Write about improvements for future experiments and talk about possible
errors.

Limitations of this experiment:

1. For this experiment to be accurate the conditions need to be ideal
which is not always possible in real-world settings,
2. If the temperature of the freezer varies whilst the experiment is being
done, then this could affect the accuracy of it.
3. The concentration of salt accuracy could be impacted if the dissolution
of salts’ rate varies.
4. Each salt has different chemical properties so this could also affect the
accuracy of this.
5. The sizing of the sample so the findings of this experiment may be
limited.

Hypothesis of this experiment:

A proportional decrease in the freezing point of the solution will occur due to
increasing the salt concentration in water.
