LEGAL OPINION ON HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN THE REPUBLIC OF LIBERTE
INTRODUCTION
The Republic of Liberte, a democratic country in the African continent, has one of the most
restrictive abortion laws in the world. The Constitutional Court of Liberte has repeatedly
upheld Article 116 of the Penal Code, which criminalizes abortion in all circumstances
except where it is necessary to save the life of the woman. The case of Agibu, a 13-year-
old girl who was repeatedly raped and denied an abortion, highlights the human rights
violations in Liberte. The African Centre for Women Justice (ACWJ) has approached me as
an expert in human rights for a legal opinion on the possibility of instituting legal proceedings
against the Republic of Liberte before the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
