Stimulants - Used to relieve tiredness and increase alertness Examples of Stimulants - Nicotine (Tobacco), Cocaine, Amphetamines, Methamphetamine, Caffiene Possible Effects of Stimulants - Increased heart & respiratory rates, elevated blood pressure, decreased appetite, high doses can cause rapid/irregular heartbeat, loss of coordination, blurred vision, dizziness, anxiety, restlessness, delusions Stimulant- Symptoms of Overdose - Agitation, increase in body temperature, hallucinations, convulsions, possible death Stimulant- Withdrawal Syndrome - Apathy, long periods of sleep, irritability, depression, disorentation Narcotics/Opioids/Opiates - Dull senses, relieve pain (substances that bind at opiate receptors) Examples of Narcotics/Opioids/Opiates - Opium, Morphine, Heroin, Codeine fentanyl, oxycontin, destromethorphan, methadone, buprenorphine, naloxone Possible Effects of Narcotics/Opioids/Opiates - Euphoria, drowsiness, respiratory depression, constricted (pin-point) pupils Narcotics/Opioids/Opiates- Symptoms of Overdose - Slow/shallow breathing, clammy skin, convulsions, coma, possible death Narcotics/Opioids/Opiates- Withdrawal Symptoms - Watery eyes, runny nose, yawning, sweating, restlessness, irritability, loss of appetite, nausea/vomiting, tremors, drug craving, depression, elevated heart rate, blood pressure, chills (alternating with flushing and excessive sweating), pain in bones, muscle spasms Cannabis - Marijuana (dried tops/leaves of plant) & Hashish (stronger- made from resin secretions of plant); drug alters perceptions and heightens sensory awareness like hallucinogens Possible effects of Cannabis - Euphoria followed by relaxation, loss of appetite, impaired memory, concentration, knowledge retention, loss of coordination, more vivid senses (taste, smell, etc), disoriented behavior, irritation to lungs/respiratory system, may cause cancer, anxiety and/or panic attacks
