OPS 360 - Final Exam - The Goal 2023
Title of the Book
The Goal - A Process of Ongoing Improvement
Written by
Eliyahu M. Goldratt and Jeff Cox
The Goal is about
Science and Education
Science
An understanding of the way the world is and why it is that way
What is the ultimatum Peach gives Rogo?
He's has three months to turn the plant around or he closes the plant.
Where does the story take place?
Bearington (Rogo's Hometown)
What is the company in the book?
UniCo

Rogo works for the UniWare division
What is the big issue with Rogo's plant?
late orders - getting things out the door!
What ultimatum did Granby give to Peach?
He has till the end of the year to improve performance or the whole division goes up for
sale, and Peach goes with it.
productivity
accomplishing something in terms of goals

the act of bringing a company closer to its goal
the three measurements central to knowing if the company is making money
Net Profit
ROI
Cash Flow
What does Rogo decide the goal to be?
to make money by increasing net profit, while simultaneously increasing return on
investment, and simultaneously increasing cash flow
three measurements which express the goal of making money, which also permit
you to develop operational rules for running your plant
throughput - the rate at which the system generates money through sales

inventory - all the money that the system has invested in purchasing things which it
intends to sell

operational expense - is all about the money the system spends in order to turn
inventory into throughput

(if you want to change one of them you will have to change at least one of the other
ones as well)

, The way to express the goal is
increase throughput while simultaneously reducing both inventory and operating
expenses
Who did Rogo run into at the airport that's been helping him think?
Jonah his physics teacher
balanced plant
The capacity of each and every resource is balanced exactly with demand from the
market
when capacity is trimmed exactly to marketing demands
throughput goes down, inventory goes up, and operational expenses goes up
dependent events phenomena
an event, or a series of events, must take place before another can begin... the
subsequent event depends upon the ones prior to it
Statistical Fluctuations phenomena
types of information that vary from one instance to the next
How does Rogo figure out dependent events and statistical fluctuations on the
scouts hike?
- first by observing how the scouts are walking in a single file line

- then creating a game with matches and dice

- he then observes the scouts walking with the fastest (Andy) at the front to the slowest
(Herbie) at the back. where he realizes that whoever is moving slowest in the troop is
the one who is governing throughput as a whole.

- Rogo then reassembles the team so the slowest is in front and the fastest is in back.

- He then takes out Herbies items from his pack and gives them to the faster people.

- He now has a well oiled machine!
Covariance
the impact of one variable upon others in the same group
in a linear dependency of two or more variables
the fluctuations of the variables down the line will fluctuate around the maximum
deviation established by any preceding variables
Who is the team Rogo assembles at work?
Lou - chief accountant/ plant controller

Bob Donovan - production manager

Stacey - plant inventory manager

Ralph Nakamura - data processing manager
A bottleneck resource
any resource whose capacity is equal to or less than the demand placed upon it
A non-bottleneck resource
