Posted 10/24 After reading the assignment and required reading for this week, I feel that nursing theory is necessary to our every changing, complex nursing profession in that it provides rationale behind the care that we provide. Nursing is an evolving profession, an academic discipline, and a science (McEwen, 2014). Essentially, theory is the core of clinical performance within the nursing profession. Nurses have the scientific knowledge to apply their professional, individualized interventions to promote health, prevent diseases and care for acutely ill patients. It is clear to me that theory paves the path to autonomy by guiding practice, promoting education and research as a man of gaining recognition for the nursing profession. From Nightingale to the present, nursing theorists have been the foundational leverage that the nursing profession needs to continue to care for people the right way, the ethical way, every time (Kamick, 2014). It is widely believed that use of theory offers structure and organization to nursing knowledge and provides a systematic means of collecting data to describe, explain, and predict nursing practice (McEwen, 2014). Providing a definition of nursing theory also helps nurses to understand their purpose and role in the healthcare setting. By identifying the nursing profession, theory can benefit patients, managers and other healthcare professionals to recognize the unique contribution that nurses make within the realm of healthcare.
