Iran and Saudi Arabia are two neighbors that are locked in a fierce battle on the regional
supremacy. The feud dates back to the 1930s due to their religious differences. The enmity
between these two nations is largely attributed to the differences in religious groups as they each
follow two of the main Islamic groups. Iran mainly believes in the Shia Muslim while Saudi
Arabia sees itself as the leading Sunni Powerful Muslim in the region. It's this religious schism
that has created a feuding relationship between these two nations. The neighboring countries in
the region look upon these two nations for support which and their relationship to each other is
largely influenced by the Muslim group in which they are allied.
Historically Saudi Arabia is recognized as the monarchy and home of Islam where Islam
religion was given birth to, which made the nation see itself as the leader of the Muslim world
and religion. Iran was not in agreement with this fact and it challenged it in 1979 in which Iran
created another state within the region to expand the religion beyond the Saudi Arabia border.
Therefore, this was the major reason that led to the development of the feud between these two
nations (Mirtorabi, 2019).
The confrontation between these two nations is based on religious alignment. As Iran
leads the Shia group of Islam while Saudi Arabia leads the Sunni community, these communities
have been in the continuous confrontation over the years. The religious beliefs and need for each
group to have supremacy in the region has been one of the major reasons behind the animosity
between the nations. The confrontation still exists between these two nations with the nations
despite the division that took place in 1979.
