Activity 2.6.1
Trade Union can be defined as an organization that looks out for employees, ensuring they
are treated correctly and equally by providing them with support and legal services. In this
context, India’s BPO workers are being persuaded by UNI (a trade union) to become union
members but the workers refuse, therefore the benefits of joining the UNI will be evaluated.
One benefit the BPO workers will experience when becoming member of UNI is that their
job security will be enhanced. Though they already have job security from the company
BPO, by having the trade union available to back them up anytime, it enhances the sense of
security for the employers, putting them in a more comfortable position if anything
unexpected happens. For instance, if a company were used to providing job security for the
employees, but suddenly make changes that seems unequal for the employees, the
employees can make use of the trade union.
Another benefit the workers may experience when becoming part of UNI is to have an
organization or a group of people to fight for what is believed to be equal. Joining a trade
union can somehow help companies treat employees better by providing more facilities so
as to achieve job satisfaction. For instance, according to the case study, many young
workers often work beyond contracted time and ignore health problems, having the trade
union can help solve this matter. Through legal support and services, they might be able to
negotiate with the company so as to solve the problems with young workers experiencing
health problems.
Though there are several benefits that comes with joining a trade union, there is also a
disadvantages such as having to deal with the financial costs of union membership.
Considering that the workers already have job security provided by BPO, it will not be
necessary for them to become a union member as it only acts as a backup if anything
happens. This could be disadvantageous as money is wasted on something that might not
be used, when it can actually be used for other more important matters.
All in all, when workers of BPO become union members, it will both come with advantages
and disadvantages. One advantage include enhanced job security while a disadvantage
would be having to waste money on the financial costs of becoming a member. Therefore, it
is better for employees to become union members because if anything were to happen that
could lead to injustice, there will always be something that can back them up.
