, Journal #2
Throughout this second journal entry, I will reflect on my practicum experience so far in
the pediatric setting. I will discuss the growth and development I have accomplished as well as
identifying opportunities for improvement in my clinical skills. In addition, I will describe an
interesting case that I have never seen before and the challenges that came with it. I will include
if I would do anything differently from my preceptor as well as any challenging culture
differences.
Before beginning this pediatric practicum, I knew that I was going to love it because of
my passion for caring for children and their families and my experience as a postpartum nurse.
One of my strengths is caring for not only the patient but also the family as a whole and
integrating the plan of care with them. This pediatric clinical has continued to develop my skills
in caring for pediatric patients and their families and the ability to partner with the parents of the
child in effort to create the best plan of care and best outcomes for them. When caring for this
population, it is crucial to incorporate family-centered care, which is an approach to health care
that is considerate of and receptive to individuals families’ needs and values (Davidson,
Aslakson, Long, Puntillo, Kross, Hart, Cox, Wunsch, Wickline, Nunnally, Netzer, Kentish-
Barnes, Sprung, Hartog, Coombs, Gerritsen, Hopkins, Franck, Skrobik, Curtis, 2017).
Through my growth and development so far, there are also some opportunities for
improvement in my clinical skills. I have become confident and competent in caring for children
and working with families, but the adolescent age group with mental disorders can be quite
challenging. This is one area I would need additional improvement on and learning effective
communication techniques in order to provide the best care for them.
