Suffrage - Answer: The right to vote
Primary Election - Answer: An election in which the Democratic or Republican Party
chooses its nominees for public offices. In presidential election years, the primary also
plays a key role in selecting Texas delegates o the parties national nomination
conventions.
Runoff election - Answer: A required election if no candidate receives an absotute
majority of the votes cast in a primary race or in many nonpartisan elections. The runoff
is between the top two vote-getters.
Voting Rights Act - Answer: A federal law designed to protect the voting rights of
minorities with the inclusion of several provisions that regulate elections. The act, as
amended, has eliminated most of the more restrictive state laws that limited minority
political participation.
General Election - Answer: An election for state, federal, and county offices held in
November of even-numbered years. The ballot includes nominees of the two major
political parties plus other candidates who meet certain legal requirements.
Local Election - Answer: An election for city council, the school board, and certain other
local offices. Most of these are nonpartisan.
Special Election - Answer: An election set by the legislature or called by the governor
for a specific purpose, such as voting on constitutional amendments or filling a vacancy
in a legislative office. Local governments also can call special elections.
