QUESTION 1
1.1 “Like a hungry bird” - a bird fly’s so bird can means flying this phrase could
means that she felt like she had no choice, “hungry” because she was
hungry for freedom.
, “Like a persephone”- “persephone means a goddess of the underworld”
she felt like it was her only home.
This two similies contribute to the overall meaning of the poem because by
this two similies the poet is explaining how she committed suicide or tried to
commite suicide.
1.2 “Persephone was a god from “greek” Persephone must spent each winter
by the king of the underworld . Ingrid jonker commited suicide on 19 july
1965 which is a winter month. Line 6 means the suicide happened in the
winter.
1.3 Ingrid jonker uses a child figure to explain all the innocent death that
occurred in apartheid era. In the end “the child” the small victim of
violence who has grown into a strong power figure who was not affect or
limited by unfair rules and regulations by the government and are now
free

1.5 In line 15 of the poem in the second stanza the say “we travelled in packs.
Hunting and hunted” this could mean that after the suicide incident of Ingrid
they began to look for her body meaning the “hunted” for her body. In line 16
and 17 they carried “nets”. Nets is use for fishing the poet want to describe
here that they are fishing out Ingrid’s body. The relic of pain they captured is
Ingrid’s body. Those who never liked her line 18-20 are now sharing her poem
with everyone else and teaching it to children. In the last line, line 20 the
speaker try to connect with Ingrid when she visits her grave and everything
seems to remind the speaker of the poet.
