The Constant Gardener Directed by Fernando Meirelles

The point of the movie is to raise awareness to the viewers of what is
happening in the world.

Beginning/ Opening Scene:
- Begins with a voice over= British voice (Britain colonised Kenya)
- Proxemic Range: Justin and Tessa are intimate and have a close relationship
- Overexposed lighting= not linear, = looks like a memory- Justin is left behind =
last time he saw her
- Tilted angle= something is o
- bird noises= chaos
- somber mood
- some juxtaposition= can’t work out what is wrong
- the African nature is shown as beautiful even though their bodies are found
which is the opposite of beautiful

Sandy goes to see Justin
- Justin (played by Ralph Fiennes) loves to garden= goes with title
- Sandy gives Justin the bad news= Justin has no expression, = justin cares for
Sandy’s feelings even though he has just received the worst news that Tessa is
dead, = he is calm
- Tessa is an activist and ghts for what she believes is right
Hospital Scene
- It is very gruesome
- the colour of the room is yellow and green and grey= old, grainy and sickness
- white cloth covering Tessa’s body= only white person in the room, =she sticks
out
- the low angle of Justin show his emotion and vulnerability
- Shaky hand held camera makes the viewer feel that they are part of the
situation
- High contrast lighting
- Sandy is physically ill= maybe Tessa and his relationship were close
First time in Kenya
- looks like chaos
- Jump cuts
- very bright colours
- hand held camera
- Tessa wasn’t the focus in the crowd
- Even as the only white person in the crowd she doesn’t stand out because she
already ts in and is part of the community
- Establishing shot
- Tessa’s characteristics are shown when the children bring her the homemade
mobile= caring, sweet to children (kisses the child’s cheeks), comfortable with
her surroundings, she has been accepted by the people
