QUESTION 1

1.1 The airline company, EAL, realised that “continuing to use a paper-based
system just did not fly”. There was simply not enough time to evaluate all the
suitable candidates. Think of other challenges that the company might have
encountered due to using a paper-based system and briefly discuss them (3
marks). Use relevant examples to support and/substantiate your discussion (1
mark). (4)

Other challenges that the company might have encountered due to using a paper-based
system are

(a) data redundancy—an employee’s name and address could be
stored in many different files;

(b) poor data control—if you had access to the file you
had access to all the data in the file, which may
not be desirable because you may want to restrict
the data viewed by a particular user;

(c) inadequate data manipulation capabilities—it was very difficult to
combine the data across files and to easily update and
to add new data; and

(d) excessive programming effort—any change in the structure of
the data (e.g., adding a new field such as a mobile
phone number or a screen name to an employee
record) required extensive changes in the programming
that accessed the data.

Examples from case study

 Too much time was spent on evaluating nonqualified candidates

 not enough time was allocated for assessing the applicants’ skills and talents
