ANSWERS QUESTION 1 (compulsory)
1.1 Life orientation is the study of self in relation to others and to society.
It is seen as a unique subject in the FET band in that it applies a
holistic approach to learning, teaching and assessment. It is
concerned with personal, social, intellectual, emotional spiritual,
motor and physical growth and development of one’s self in society
and thus encourages the development of a balanced and confident
learner who will contribute to society and create an improved quality
of life for all. Life orientation prepares learners for life and the
responsibilities that come with it. This subject addresses knowledge,
values, attitudes and skills about self, being a responsible citizen, a
healthy and productive life, social engagement and career choices. It
equips learners to live a meaningful and successful life and to make
informed decisions. Life orientation is an interdisciplinary subject that
integrates knowledge, values, skills and processes embedded in
various disciplines such as sociology, psychology ect.
1.2 Physical education, religious education, life skills, guidance and
health education.
1.3 Evaluation: means that you are making a judgement about the
learners’ knowledge, behaviour or performance, or the learners’
values and attitudes. The word itself means that something is valued.
Assessment: is a strategy for measuring knowledge, behaviour or
performance, values and attitudes. It is referred to as a “data-
gathering” strategy. Assessment involves the measurement of a
learners’ progress against a set of learning outcomes rather than the
comparative evaluation of one learner against another. Assessment
implies an ongoing, continuous process where the leaner achieves
success once the data matches or demonstrates competence in a
particular learning outcome.
