This module has also given me an opportunity to improve my academic writing and research skills. 1.2 Portfolio Purpose A portfolio is a structured collection of evidence that demonstrates a student’s learning, reflection, and academic progress throughout a module (Booth et al., 2024). In this case, the portfolio brings together different assignments to illustrate my understanding of Africa’s history and my ability to apply historical methods. 1.3 Module Purpose The purpose of HSY1511 is to introduce students to Africa in the world from a historical perspective, with emphasis on the continent’s role in shaping and being shaped by global processes. It encourages students to engage critically with primary and secondary sources, to recognise the importance of African perspectives in history, and to apply historical skills such as source analysis, essay construction, and referencing (Unisa, 2025).
