―Theory is the Engine of Research‖: A Critical
Evaluation
Introduction

The idea that ―theory is the engine of research‖ raises a fundamental question about
the role of theorisation in the process of knowledge creation. Much like an engine
powers a vehicle, theory is often said to drive research forward, providing the
intellectual framework that enables systematic inquiry. Yet, the relationship
between theory and research is neither linear nor uncontested. Some argue that
without theory, research risks becoming directionless and fragmented. Others
contend that theory may constrain innovation, introduce bias, or lag behind
emergent realities, making research overly abstract and detached from practice.

In education and the social sciences more broadly, this debate is particularly salient.
Educational research deals with complex human, social, and institutional dynamics
that resist reduction to neat theoretical models. As such, evaluating the claim
requires interrogating not only the significance of theory but also its limitations.

This essay critically evaluates the statement ―theory is the engine of research‖ by
examining the significance and insignificance of theorisation in research. Drawing
on educational research perspectives, it explores the functions of theory, the ways
in which it can guide, enrich, or restrict inquiry, and the implications for knowledge
creation. The essay ultimately argues that while theory is a crucial engine in
research, it is not the only one — methodology, practice, and context also
contribute powerfully to the movement of research. Thus, theory must be seen as
both necessary and insufficient, requiring a critical balance to ensure it serves,
rather than dominates, the research endeavour.
