Describe how language develops as a process in your own life in communicating
in various settings. Provide real-life examples to illustrate how context affects
language and communication.

Language develops as a lifelong process, shaped by social interaction, cultural
background, and context. According to Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, language is
acquired and refined through interaction with others in meaningful settings (Vygotsky,
1978). This has been evident in my own life as I communicate in different environments
such as home, school, and the workplace.

At home, my language reflects family culture and values. Growing up, I often switched
between my mother tongue and English depending on the situation. For example, I
used my home language when speaking with grandparents, which conveyed respect
and maintained cultural traditions, while English was more common with my siblings.
This aligns with Gee’s (2015) view that language is always linked to identity and social
practices.

In school, language developed in more formal and academic ways. Teachers
encouraged English as the medium of instruction, which improved my grammar and
vocabulary. For instance, in group discussions I had to adjust my tone, avoid slang, and
use structured arguments to be understood. This illustrates how educational settings
demand more formal communication styles (Halliday, 1978).

At work, language further evolved to include professional and technical terms. When
speaking to supervisors, I use formal greetings and concise, respectful wording,
