RCE2601
ASSIGNMENT 4 2025
UNIQUE NO.
DUE DATE: 4 SEPTEMBER 2025
, RCE2601 – Research and Critical Reasoning
Assignment Title: Problem-Based Application of Research Concepts
Question 1 – Literature Review Design (20 marks)
1a. Conceptual Framework vs. Theoretical Framework
A conceptual framework is a research tool that outlines the possible courses of action
or presents the researcher’s preferred approach to an idea or thought. It is based on the
researcher’s understanding of the research problem and is constructed from relevant
concepts, variables, and relationships drawn from literature, prior research, and
personal insights (Adom et al., 2018). It serves as a map that guides the study, showing
how the research variables interrelate in the specific context.
A theoretical framework, on the other hand, is grounded in existing theories that have
been tested and validated. It provides a lens through which the study is interpreted,
often dictating the variables to be examined and the methods of analysis (Grant &
Osanloo, 2014). It is more rigid and theory-driven, while the conceptual framework is
flexible and can integrate multiple theories.
Key differences:
Aspect Conceptual Framework Theoretical Framework
Basis Researcher’s conceptualisation + literature Established theory
Flexibility More adaptable Less flexible
Purpose Guide research design and analysis Provide theoretical lens
