Assignment 2

, Being a Professional Teacher

1. Definition of a Professional Teacher

A professional teacher is an educator who demonstrates strong subject knowledge,
effective pedagogical skills, and a commitment to ethical conduct. Beyond delivering
academic content, a professional teacher engages in lifelong learning and nurtures
learners’ holistic development—intellectual, emotional, and social (SACE, 2016).

My stance: I agree with this definition because it balances two vital elements:
competence in teaching and adherence to ethical responsibility, which together shape
professional integrity.

Justification (linked to the SACE Code of Professional Ethics):

1. Commitment to learners – Teachers must respect the dignity, rights, and
welfare of every learner while ensuring their educational interests remain the
priority (SACE, 2016, Section 3.1).
2. Commitment to the profession – Educators are expected to act in ways that
protect the reputation of the teaching profession by maintaining competence,
trustworthiness, and high ethical standards (SACE, 2016, Section 3.3).
