MULTIPLE CHOICE,ASSURED EXCELLENCE
1.1 INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this study is to examine how The Sowetan, a
prominent South African daily newspaper, covers sports
stories, with particular attention to the themes, tones, and
frames used in its reporting. This research aims to uncover
patterns in the newspaper’s sports coverage, exploring
whether certain sports, athletes, or events receive more
prominence, and the possible implications of such coverage.
The study will employ content analysis to identify recurring
frames and themes in the sports section of The Sowetan. It
will be guided by the framing theory, which examines how
media outlets select certain aspects of a story to highlight,
thereby shaping audience perceptions.
The following sections of this study will outline the research
problem, subproblems, a review of related literature, the
theoretical framework, and the proposed research design. A
screenshot of the cover page of The Sowetan will be attached
as an addendum to verify the source of the data.
, 1.2 RESEARCH PROBLEM STATEMENT/MAIN ISSUE
Although sports are a significant part of South African culture
and media coverage, there is limited understanding of how
The Sowetan frames its sports stories. It is unclear whether its
reporting promotes diversity in sports representation or
reinforces certain stereotypes and hierarchies. This research
seeks to address the main question:
How does The Sowetan frame its sports coverage, and what
patterns emerge in the representation of different sports,
athletes, and events?
1.3 SUBPROBLEMS
1. What types of sports receive the most coverage in The
Sowetan, and how frequently are they reported on?
2. How are different athletes (in terms of gender,
nationality, or race) represented in The Sowetan’s sports
stories?
3. What dominant frames (e.g., success stories, conflict,
national pride) are used in the coverage of sports in The
Sowetan?
