functions. Describe seven (7) different broad types of values.
Work values are the fundamental beliefs and principles that guide police officers in how
they should conduct themselves in the line of duty. They not only shape professional
behaviour but also build public trust. Below are seven broad types of values relevant to
policing:
1. Integrity
o Integrity involves honesty, transparency, and consistency between words
and actions. Police officers must uphold the law impartially, avoiding any
form of deception or misconduct. Integrity builds public confidence and
reinforces the legitimacy of the police service.
2. Respect for Human Rights
o This value entails treating all people with dignity, fairness, and without
discrimination, in line with the Constitution of South Africa, 1996, and the
South African Police Service Act 68 of 1995. Officers must protect life,
liberty, and security while respecting the rights of suspects, victims, and
the community.
3. Accountability
o Police officers must take responsibility for their decisions and actions.
Accountability ensures transparency in policing and encourages
compliance with laws, regulations, and ethical standards. This includes
being answerable to superiors, oversight bodies, and the public.
4. Professionalism
o Professionalism requires competence, discipline, reliability, and
