Question 1 – Definition of a Professional Teacher

Definition:
A professional teacher is an educator who is knowledgeable, skilled, ethical, and
committed to promoting learners’ academic and personal growth, while upholding the
dignity of the profession.
(Adapted from SACE, 2019)

Stance: I agree with this definition.

Reasons (SACE Code of Professional Ethics):

1. Commitment to learners: Teachers must respect each learner’s dignity and
ensure their development in a safe and supportive environment (SACE, 2019).

2. Commitment to the profession: Teachers must conduct themselves in ways
that maintain the honour and dignity of the teaching profession (SACE, 2019).

Professional Ethics. Pretoria: SACE. Retrieved from https://www.sace.org.za

Question 2 – Scenarios

Scenario 1 – Teachers storing alcohol at school

Stance: Not professional.
Reasons:

1. Violates the principle of acting in a proper and becoming way; storing alcohol on
school premises can bring the profession into disrepute (SACE, 2019).

2. Endangers learners by introducing prohibited substances into the school
environment, contrary to the commitment to protect learners’ safety.
