PRF2601
ASSIGNMENT 1 SEMESTER 2 2025

UNIQUE NO.
DUE DATE: AUGUST 2025

, Introduction to Professionalism for Policing IIA

Question 1

Seven broad types of work values in policing

1. Integrity
Integrity means being consistently honest, truthful, and ethical in all actions and
decisions. A police officer with integrity will not falsify reports, accept bribes, or
misuse authority, even when such actions could benefit them personally. Integrity
builds public trust and strengthens the credibility of the police service.
2. Accountability
Police officers are entrusted with significant powers, and they must be willing to
take responsibility for their actions. Accountability ensures that officers explain
and justify their decisions to supervisors, oversight bodies, and the public. It also
involves accepting the consequences of misconduct or mistakes.
3. Fairness
Fairness means treating all individuals impartially, regardless of race, gender,
religion, or social status. It requires officers to enforce the law without prejudice
and to make decisions based solely on facts and evidence. Fairness reduces
bias and promotes justice.
4. Service Orientation
A service-oriented police officer prioritises the safety and well-being of the
community. This value emphasises proactive engagement, assistance to those in
need, and working to prevent crime before it occurs. It reflects the idea that
policing is a public service, not merely a law enforcement function.
5. Respect for Human Rights
Police officers must uphold the rights and dignity of all people. This includes
respecting the right to life, freedom of speech, and protection from unlawful arrest
or detention. Respect for human rights is essential for maintaining the legitimacy
of the police service in a democratic society.
