ASSIGNMENT 8
2025

, 1.1 Reading for Fun & Children’s Literature

1.1.1 Engaging in reading for enjoyment promotes a positive emotional connection to
books, which in turn supports the development of a lifelong reading culture in children
(Cremin, 2024).

1.1.2 Immersion in stories allows young readers to use their imagination and step into
the world of the characters, enabling them to relate to the characters’ experiences and
view themselves as readers (Cremin, 2024).

1.1.3 When children identify with characters in a narrative, they are more likely to
cultivate empathy, improve emotional sensitivity, and enhance their understanding of
social interactions (Cremin, 2024).

1.1.4 During the colonial period, children’s literature imported from Europe often
sidelined African perspectives, prioritising foreign cultural norms over indigenous
traditions (Phungula, 2021).

1.1.5 Books that represent children’s own linguistic, cultural, and environmental
backgrounds strengthen comprehension skills, reinforce identity, and increase reading
engagement (Scorer, 2025).

1.1.6 The concept of “Africanisation” involves incorporating African languages,
traditional sayings, cultural values, and familiar contexts into children’s books to ensure
they remain culturally relevant and identity-affirming (Phungula, 2021).

1.1.7 African children’s literature has its roots in oral traditions such as folktales,
proverbs, and storytelling which were later adapted into written forms, helping to
safeguard cultural heritage while promoting literacy (Phungula, 2021).

1.1.8 Stories convey ideas, emotions, and life experiences through symbolism, which
supports children in developing their ability to express themselves and interpret
meaning (Cremin, 2024).

1.1.9 When literature mirrors children’s everyday realities such as family routines,
community activities, and familiar surroundings it enhances their vocabulary and
improves their understanding of the text (Phekani, 2023).
