EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (EAP): SUBSTANCE ABUSE EDUCATION
AND SUPPORT
1. INTRODUCTION / BACKGROUND (10)
Substance abuse in the workplace is a significant challenge for South African
employers, especially in industries with high stress levels, safety risks, and shift work.
Employees with substance use disorders (SUDs) are more likely to experience
absenteeism, injuries, performance issues, and interpersonal conflicts (Nova Recovery
Center, 2020). These challenges negatively impact productivity, increase operational
costs, and endanger workplace safety.
An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) that focuses on substance abuse
prevention, education, and access to counselling is essential for workplace
wellness. EAPs are confidential support services provided by employers to help
employees deal with personal problems, including alcohol or drug abuse, that may
affect job performance.
According to Attridge (2019), well-designed EAPs improve employee wellbeing, reduce
healthcare costs, and foster a culture of trust and accountability. This assignment
proposes a comprehensive EAP for organisations of all sizes, aimed at substance
abuse prevention and intervention.
2. OBJECTIVES OF THE EAP (5)
The objectives of the EAP are to:
1. Educate employees on the risks and consequences of substance abuse.
2. Offer confidential access to professional counselling and support.
3. Encourage early identification and intervention.
